“One of the last of London’s working men’s clubs — built by community, still run by community.”
Newington Green heritageWorking men’s club. Community landmark.
A London club with history in its walls.
Founded in 1888 as the Mildmay Radical Club, today The Mildmay is a volunteer-run social club with a theatre, snooker hall, bar, dance floor, sporting roots and a community spirit that has lasted more than 130 years.
About us
More than a watering hole.
A calm, civil and characterful place to meet, talk, play, celebrate and keep a rare London institution alive.
The Mildmay Club began as a place for working class people to discuss politics and enjoy the social splendour of a pub in a more civil atmosphere. Over the decades it became a social hub, an events venue, a sports home and a living archive.
Today, its Victorian red-brick frontage opens onto a theatre, rifle range, snooker hall, bar and dance floor. Its walls still carry the stories of members who served on the Western Front and of the community who supported them from home.
History
From Radical roots to rare survivor.
A timeline treatment gives the redesign an immediate sense of provenance without feeling dusty or museum-like.
Established as the Mildmay Radical Club: political, social and proudly working class.
Members serve during The Great War; letters and support connect the front line to home.
“Radical” is dropped from the name as the club’s direct political identity changes.
Members keep one of London’s last working men’s clubs alive.
